Modern Musings

(Takes on what’s happening both big and small)

That Election

Welp Donald Trump won another election and I have to be honest, I wasn’t quite expecting ~that~. Not because I necessarily had faith in our country but because I thought there were more people who think like me than there actually are. We’re drowning in analysis about what went wrong and how we got here. I’m most intrigued by the Harris campaign going down the pop culture girlie route (Call Me Daddy podcast appearance, SNL etc). While those platforms can only offer so much when it comes to deep dive policy analysis, it’s clear there’s value in knowing the cultural outlets where people go to get information in more relaxed, culturally relevant spaces. This is why I’ll also identify as a pop culture girlie myself. Whether I actually think SNL is funny or not (I don’t), where 5.3 million viewers1 choose to spend their Saturday night is pretty significant if you want to have your finger on the pulse.

The Opposite of Black History Month

One thing I will always love about Black people is we’re going to make a joke. And as someone who spends 89% of her day laughing, I’ll always be here for that. Kamala lost. Mike Tyson got beat up by a YouTuber. Black people are particularly having a bad November. While the stakes of these losses obviously widely range, so does the range of our people. It honestly knows no bounds. We’re a people who contain multitudes. We understand the repercussions AND will always have time to crack a joke.

Consider This for Comfort

If you’ve ever told me I should start a podcast, well I’m finally listening! Consider This for Comfort is your new favorite podcast where I break down why our favorite comfort shows are our favorite comfort shows and what cultural insights they offers us about society. Equal parts TV and lifestyle commentary. I’ve always enjoyed yapping about TV and society so it’s a match made in heaven. Okay so I finally listened to you, now you’ve got to listen to me. New episodes out every Wednesday on Spotify. If you want to be a guest, want to share a show I should break down or just want to show some love, reply to this email with an emoji. I’d love to hear from you!

Your Next Favorite Things

In no particular order, here are a few of my favorite things right now:
  • My favorite slice in NYC right now is at L’Industrie. Fig and bacon. Thank me later or debate me later.

  • I’ve jumped on the Scandal re-watch bandwagon and this show is wayyy more batshit than I remembered. Mellie and Cyrus are my current favs and here’s a not so shameless plug to listen to my Consider [Shondaland] for Comfort episode with Morgan Fletcher.

  • Peel and stick wallpaper from Wayfair. I’m getting back into my interior design bag.

  • Any listening rooms. Think slinky, dimlit cocktail bars with incredible acoustics. I only ever want to be in ambient spaces and these haven’t missed yet. My current fav is Mr. Melo in Williamsburg.

  • Shaboozey is probably going to be my number 1 artist on my Spotify Wrapped. Nigerians supporting Nigerians. Here’s the album that I had on repeat.

Misc About Me

  • I had the privilege of  a 3-month sabbatical this year and it was amazing, duh. Here’s some sights and sounds from a tour throughout Monaco and a chaotic boat tour with some Swifties.

  • Black media from the future. Here’s me on why Chicago’s Southside is the blueprint for media reparations.

Sincerely,
